Easter Fun and Shiba Inu Reunion in Tucker

Heartwarming Tales Amidst Adversity

It’s Cathy from Rough Draft bringing you my weekly newsletter focused on Tucker. In a landscape often dominated by negative headlines, it’s refreshing to share a story that embodies a mix of crime, sorrow, redemption, and, of course, our beloved dogs. Additionally, this newsletter features an artistic event poised to unleash your creative side, a puzzling item on the upcoming city council agenda, and a variety of outdoor activities to enjoy around Tucker, provided you can manage the seasonal allergies. Wishing you a wonderful weekend, Cathy.

Easter Celebrations at Tucker Presbyterian

Mark your calendars for an Easter Egg Hunt at Tucker Presbyterian on Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m. Additionally, a Good Friday Service is slated for April 18 at 6 p.m., with the Easter Sunday Service taking place on April 20 at 10:30 a.m.

A Remarkable Reunion for a Show Dog

Chantel Hunter stumbled upon a flea-infested and largely hairless dog while tending to plants in a school garden in Tucker, unaware that she had found a retired American Kennel Club Grand Champion Shiba Inu, stolen over a year prior. On April 7, while at the Turning Sun School’s Tucker Campus, Hunter encountered the friendly dog, now known as Shogatsu, who approached her with a worn rope still attached to his collar. The dog appeared to be in distress, suffering from significant fur loss. Hunter contacted DeKalb County Animal Services, and a quick scan of the dog revealed a microchip, leading to the identification of his owner. This discovery marked the end of a painful 13-month search for the six-year-old champion Shiba Inu. Stay tuned for the details of the touching reunion and Shogatsu’s journey to recovery.

Upcoming Council Meeting Promises Intrigue

The Tucker City Council meeting on April 21 will address an agenda item that has sparked considerable interest, described by some as confusing. Luxe Events is seeking a Special Land Use Permit (SLUP) alongside three variances for the property at 2101 Northlake Parkway, aiming to establish a special event facility within the NL-1 (Northlake High-Intensity Commercial) zoning area. Interestingly, Luxe Events has already been operating at this site since early 2023, cohabiting with Fit Factory and SKRRT under the same roof. Tucker’s staff and the city’s planning commission have recommended approval for some aspects of the SLUP but not all. Notably, staff discussions with the property owner, leasing agent, and Luxe Events spanned several meetings to navigate the SLUP process and address zoning ordinance regulations. However, it took until December 2024 for the applicant to submit a complete application, during which time the property owner addressed various code violations to ensure compliance. The upcoming Monday meeting is anticipated to be quite engaging, so be sure to check out the council’s agenda.

Artistic Endeavors with Jeremy Rogers

In a delightful fusion of creativity, Jeremy Rogers, a Dunwoody resident and certified Bob Ross instructor, is set to lead an oil painting workshop in Tucker on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Kelley Cofer Peach Pit, located at 4359 N. Park Drive. The cost for participation is $60 per person, which covers all necessary materials for creating a landscape inspired by Henderson Park. I had the pleasure of attending one of Jeremy’s classes in Dunwoody, and it was fascinating to see the diverse artistic interpretations that emerged from the same set of instructions. The image showcasing my “pink sky” rendition is a testament to Jeremy’s exceptional teaching skills, although he can’t work miracles! Space is limited, so don’t miss your chance to register.

Outdoor Activities and Local Events

This Saturday, April 12, from 3-5 p.m., join the Tucker Sip-N-Stroll at Tucker Nature Preserve, where you can enjoy live music and a glass of wine. Local beekeepers from Sneaky Bee Backyard Honey will be present to share insights into their craft and offer locally sourced honey for sale. There’s no need to RSVP, but be sure to bring your ID if you wish to enjoy adult beverages. Additionally, the Tucker Cruise-In returns for the season on April 12, kicking off at 10 a.m. on Main Street, culminating in awards around 1 p.m. There is a small registration fee of $5.00 to enter your vehicle. Lastly, don’t miss the final lead-up event for ARTucker on April 12 at The Corner Cup from noon to 2 p.m., featuring Andrea Winkler, a beloved ARTucker jeweler, who will demonstrate the art of cold connections—techniques used to join metal and other materials without heat. If allergies are a concern, consider attending Tucker Theatre’s performance of Lionel Bart’s “Oliver” next weekend, with tickets available for purchase.
